Mina Kim, Cellist
Hailed as “eloquent” by the Boston Globe, Korean-born cellist Mina Kim has been making music in the Boston area since 2010. As an active performer, Mina frequently takes the stage with the Rasa String Quartet and Trio Oko. As an educator, she teaches at Phillips Exeter Academy and the College of the Holy Cross. Mina founded Queer Ensemble Project, a chamber music series brought to LGBTQ+ seniors and youths, focusing on building community through live music, with her colleague Sam Kelder.
Mina debuted at Carnegie Hall with ROSIN for a fundraiser for the New York Women’s Foundation in 2017. Her concerto debut was with the Busan Youth Philharmonic Orchestra at age 13, and since then she has performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra and USP Chamber Orchestra.
Her recent recording projects include A Far Cry, Awadagin Pratt, and Roomful of Teeth’s collaboration, Stillpoint. Jesse Montgomery’s Rounds from the album received a GRAMMY Award in 2024. Mina can also be heard in ROSIN‘s second album, Reprise, and Brian Shankar Adler’s Echoes of the Gomero. Mina has attended music festivals including Tanglewood Music Center, Maine Chamber Music Seminar, and Lyricafest. A former member of the Hartford Symphony, Mina also enjoys being part of cello sections of numerous orchestras around New England.
Mina’s primary mentors, Yeesun Kim, Mike Block, and Terry King, have helped her become the cellist and musician she is today. Her dream is to become a great mentor in guiding emerging cellists to find their own musical voices just as her teachers did for her. In 2023, Mina received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the New England Conservatory with a minor in musicology.
